N’Djamena – Sudan Now | February 23, 2026
The Chadian government announced the closure of its land borders with Sudan “until further notice,” describing the move as a precautionary measure aimed at monitoring developments in the war in Sudan and preventing the spillover of tensions into its territory.
The authorities said the decision followed repeated security incidents in the border areas, pointing to what they described as incursions and violations carried out by parties to the Sudanese conflict, without naming any specific side in the official statement.
Local sources and corroborating reports said that elements of the RSF crossed into Chadian territory and clashed with the Chadian army, resulting in fatalities. Authorities have not issued an independent detailed statement specifying the casualty figures.
The government affirmed that the border closure applies to all crossing points and includes the suspension of the movement of people and goods, with the possibility of granting limited exceptions for humanitarian cases subject to prior authorization. It emphasized that the measure is intended to protect national sovereignty and ensure the safety of citizens and refugees in the border regions.
The authorities urged residents of the border areas to adhere to security instructions and remain calm, while affirming their right to respond to any attack that violates their territory.
The Chadian move comes after repeated incidents of armed cross-border incursions attributed to elements of the RSF, which were accompanied by clashes with the Chadian army in recent months, prompting N’Djamena to tighten security measures along the border in anticipation of escalating tensions.
