Port Sudan – Sudan Now | March 23, 2026
The Governor of the Darfur Region, Minni Arko Minawi, met in Port Sudan with the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, to discuss political and humanitarian developments in the country, in the presence of Political Affairs Officer Nayla Hajar.
The United Nations delegation expressed concern during the meeting over the deteriorating humanitarian situation, particularly in the Darfur region, stressing the importance of ensuring the continued flow of humanitarian aid and advancing a comprehensive dialogue leading to a humanitarian truce.
Minni Arko Minawi presented a vision for a political solution based on four pillars: preserving Sudan’s unity, maintaining the unity of the government, safeguarding the unity of the armed forces, and emphasizing the exclusion of the United Arab Emirates from any role in the anticipated political dialogue.
Both sides agreed to continue coordination with international partners to support dialogue efforts among Sudanese parties, in a way that contributes to ending the crisis and achieving stability.
These developments come amid ongoing efforts by the United Nations to launch a political process in Sudan, alongside the worsening humanitarian crisis resulting from the war that has continued since April 2023.
The Darfur region is experiencing complex humanitarian conditions due to the conflict, with continued violence and displacement increasing pressure on international efforts aimed at halting the fighting and delivering aid.
