Converging sources reported that the Rapid Support Forces have arrested journalist Mohamed Saleh Al-Bashar, known as “Triko,” in East Darfur State, and taken him to an undisclosed location, in a move that has sparked widespread concern among media and human rights circles.
The sources said the arrest was carried out without any explanation or formal charges, raising concerns about the journalist’s safety amid the complex security situation in Darfur.
This development comes as three other journalists remain in detention by the RSF -Muammar Ibrahim, Magdi Youssef Al-Zein, and Mahmoud Shalabi- with no available information regarding the conditions of their detention or their health status.
Activists and human rights organizations have called for the immediate release of the detained journalists, holding the RSF fully responsible for their safety. They also urged the international community to intervene to halt what they described as the increasing targeting of journalists in conflict zones.
Darfur has witnessed a sustained deterioration in security since the outbreak of war in April 2023, leading to increasing restrictions on journalistic work and difficulties in accessing information.
Human rights reports indicate a rise in violations against media professionals in Sudan, including arbitrary arrests and detention without trial, amid the absence of legal safeguards and the ongoing conflict.
