The European Union’s Special Envoy for Sudan, Wolfram Vetter said that organizing parallel examinations in areas under the control of the RSF undermines the future of education and constitutes an implicit call for separation.
Vetter added in a post on his official account, that education and the future of Sudan’s youth must be protected from the repercussions of the conflict, stressing the European Union’s support for Sudan’s unity and its rejection of any parallel entities or alternative education systems.
The European official’s remarks came amid controversy over the organization of examinations in areas outside government control, raising concerns about the potential impact on the unity of the country’s education system.
Sudan’s education sector has faced widespread disruption since the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023, with schooling halted in several areas and major difficulties in organizing official examinations across Sudan.
International actors warn that the proliferation of multiple education systems in conflict-affected areas could deepen institutional fragmentation and undermine students’ futures, including the recognition of academic certificates.
