The Sudanese government reaffirmed its commitment to fully cooperate with the UN Security Council’s Sanctions Panel of Experts mandated under Resolution 1591 concerning the Darfur region.
Ambassador Jaafar Soumi Toto, Director of the Peace and Humanitarian Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the national coordination mechanism for implementing the resolution had received the Panel of Experts, comprising specialists in regional and humanitarian affairs, on a visit aimed at gathering information and assessing developments in Darfur, with a focus on violations, particularly those witnessed in the city of Al Fashir.
He explained, in a statement carried by the Sudan News Agency, that a meeting was held during which the team was briefed on the program of upcoming meetings with relevant government bodies, in addition to arrangements for a meeting with Sovereign Council member Ibrahim Jaber, head of the Higher Committee for Engagement with the United Nations.
He added that the coordination mechanism provided an explanation of the nature of its work, reaffirming the government’s commitment to facilitating the team’s mission so as to enable it to produce a “clear and transparent report” reflecting the realities on the ground, particularly in Darfur and Al Fashir.
Meetings with the panel of experts are expected to continue in the coming days, as part of Khartoum’s cooperation with United Nations mechanisms, aimed at enabling the panel to finalize its report for submission to the UN Security Council.
The panel of experts was established under UN Security Council Resolution 1591 to monitor the implementation of the sanctions regime imposed on Darfur, including the arms embargo, tracking violations, and submitting periodic reports to the Council.
The panel’s arrival comes at a time when the Darfur region is experiencing escalating security and humanitarian challenges, amid repeated international calls to ensure the protection of civilians, facilitate humanitarian access, and investigate conflict-related violations
