Darfur – Sudan Now | April 29, 2026
Dr. Javid Abdelmoneim, International President of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), is visiting the Darfur region to assess the organization’s medical activities on the ground, meet with patients, and engage with local authorities as part of efforts to support a safe and sustainable humanitarian response.
Abdelmoneim, accompanied by MSF Director General Vicki Hawkins, also met with local officials in Nyala, South Darfur State, where both sides discussed the scale of growing humanitarian needs, including civilian protection, healthcare provision, and responses to disease outbreaks, particularly with the rainy season approaching.
The organization stressed the importance of preserving the independence of its humanitarian work, noting that additional bureaucratic procedures or administrative restrictions could hinder aid delivery to the areas most in need.
The visit follows an earlier tour by the delegation to Khartoum and Port Sudan last January, as part of the organization’s efforts to ensure the continuity of its operations in Sudan, where it has provided free and impartial medical services to communities for more than 40 years, without discrimination based on ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.
The visit comes amid a sharp deterioration in the humanitarian situation in the Darfur region since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023, as fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF has led to the widespread collapse of the healthcare system and forced many medical facilities out of service, particularly across Darfur states.
Humanitarian organizations are also facing growing challenges in accessing affected areas due to security and administrative restrictions, as well as the continuation of military operations.
