Nairobi – Sudan Now

Abdel Wahid al-Nur, leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement, said Sudanese political groups meeting in Nairobi must produce a clear roadmap to end the war and achieve lasting peace in Sudan, warning against what he described as temporary solutions to the country’s crisis.

Speaking during the opening session of the Sudanese Declaration of Principles Forces meeting on Friday, Abdel Wahid said political actors were expected to present a practical path toward ending the conflict and addressing the roots of Sudan’s long-running instability.

The Nairobi meetings come amid ongoing efforts by Sudanese political and civil groups to revive dialogue initiatives as fighting continues between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces across several parts of the country.

Abdel Wahid said the current conflict should not be viewed solely as a war between the army and the RSF, arguing that Sudan’s crisis dates back to 1955 and has deeper political and structural causes.

“If we do not address the roots of Sudan’s crisis with courage, these will only be temporary remedies,” he said, according to remarks delivered during the session.

Participants in the conference stressed the importance of coordination and dialogue among Sudanese political forces to reach what they described as a comprehensive political solution capable of ending the war and restoring stability.

Regional and international mediation initiatives aimed at securing a ceasefire in Sudan have repeatedly stalled since the outbreak of war in April 2023, while humanitarian conditions have continued to deteriorate across conflict-affected areas, particularly in Darfur and central Sudan.

The conflict has displaced millions of people internally and into neighboring countries, while repeated attacks on infrastructure and public services have deepened Sudan’s humanitarian and economic crisis, according to international agencies.
