Berlin – Sudan Now | April 18, 2026
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, described the situation in Sudan as having reached a “catastrophic level,” warning of a continued deterioration amid declining international attention to the conflict.
Youssouf said, during his participation in the international conference on Sudan in Berlin, that the war, now in its fourth year has resulted in heavy human losses and millions of displaced people, warning of its repercussions on regional stability.
He criticized the proliferation of international initiatives, arguing that they undermine the effectiveness of diplomatic efforts and fragment attempts to end the fighting, calling for stronger coordination within a unified framework.
He also affirmed the African Union’s readiness to play a role in bridging differences, stressing that the priority must be to halt the fighting and ensure the protection of civilians.
The African Union’s remarks come at a time of intensifying international and regional initiatives on Sudan, including tracks led by multiple actors, amid growing criticism over the lack of coordination among them.
Since the outbreak of the war in Sudan in April 2023, the crisis has displaced millions of civilians and led to a severe deterioration in humanitarian conditions, with international warnings of the widening repercussions of the conflict on regional security and stability.
