Nairobi – Sudan Now
Sudanese political and civil groups launched the opening session of the Sudanese Declaration of Principles Forces for Building a New Nation conference in Nairobi on Thursday, with participants calling for dialogue and joint action to end the war and restore stability in Sudan.
Speakers at the opening session included former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, Abdel Wahid al-Nur, Ali Al-Rayeh Al-Sanhouri, Siddig Al-Zailai and Nafisa Hajar, according to a statement issued by the organizers.
The meeting focused on the need for coordination among Sudanese political and civil forces and stressed the importance of reaching a comprehensive political solution aimed at ending the conflict and achieving peace, democracy and stability.
The conference comes as diplomatic and political initiatives continue amid the ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which erupted in April 2023 and has triggered one of the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crises.
Participants in the Nairobi meeting emphasized what they described as the importance of national dialogue and collective efforts to address Sudan’s political and humanitarian challenges.
Regional and international mediation efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire and launching a political process have repeatedly stalled as fighting continues in several parts of the country, including Darfur, Khartoum and parts of central and western Sudan.
The conflict has killed thousands of people, displaced millions internally and across neighboring countries, and severely disrupted healthcare, education and basic public services, according to international humanitarian agencies.
The Nairobi gathering is part of broader efforts by Sudanese political and civil actors seeking to revive discussions over a post-war political framework amid growing international concern over the humanitarian situation in Sudan.
