Khartoum – Sudan Now

The Sudan Doctors Network said forces affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out an armed attack on villages in the Al-Marra area west of Bara in Sudan’s North Kordofan State, killing 27 people, including elderly civilians, on the second day of Eid al-Adha.

In a statement, the network said the attack targeted civilian communities with no military presence, describing the incident as a new assault on unarmed civilians.

The group said attacks on villages and residential areas constitute violations of international humanitarian law and norms prohibiting attacks on civilians during armed conflicts.

North Kordofan has witnessed escalating violence in recent months as fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF expanded across key areas of the state. The conflict has increasingly affected rural communities located along strategic supply routes linking Kordofan and Darfur.

The state has also become a focal point in the broader war between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023 and has triggered one of the world’s largest displacement and humanitarian crises, according to the United Nations.

Human rights organizations and local monitoring groups have repeatedly warned of rising civilian casualties as military operations spread into populated areas, with villages facing attacks, looting and repeated displacement.

The Sudan Doctors Network said the latest attack is likely to worsen humanitarian conditions and force additional families to flee their homes amid limited access to healthcare, food and basic services.

The network called on the international community and human rights organizations to condemn the incident and take urgent steps to protect civilians, while urging pressure on RSF leaders to halt violations against civilian populations.
