Khartoum – Sudan Now
The Sudanese Armed Forces said its air defenses shot down what it described as a hostile strategic drone over the city of Kenana in White Nile State on Friday evening.
In a statement, the army said the aircraft was detected and tracked before being intercepted, adding that air defense units successfully engaged the target.
The announcement comes amid an increase in drone activity linked to the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with both sides increasingly relying on unmanned aerial systems during military operations.
Recent months have seen a series of drone strikes targeting military and civilian infrastructure across Sudan, including airports, power facilities and strategic installations, raising concerns about the expanding role of drones in the conflict.
White Nile State has largely remained outside the main frontlines of the war, but its strategic location and economic significance have heightened concerns over potential attacks on key infrastructure.
The war between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has triggered one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, displacing millions and causing widespread damage to infrastructure across the country.
The Sudanese military did not provide further details about the type of drone or its origin.
