Port Sudan – Sudan Now
Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, said any political process aimed at resolving Sudan’s crisis must be conducted inside the country and led by Sudanese stakeholders.
Al-Burhan made the remarks during a meeting on Sunday with ambassadors from European Union member states, where he briefed the delegation on political, security and humanitarian developments in Sudan, according to a statement issued by the Sovereign Council.
He stressed the importance of respecting Sudan’s sovereignty and supporting efforts to achieve peace and stability, describing Sudan as a country with a long history and a population capable of addressing its own national challenges.
“Sudanese issues should be resolved by Sudanese themselves,” al-Burhan said, adding that Sudan welcomes international support that contributes to peace, stability and development while respecting the country’s sovereignty and independence.
The meeting comes amid growing international diplomatic efforts to address the conflict that erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a war that has displaced millions of people and fueled one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.
According to the Sovereign Council, EU ambassadors expressed their willingness to engage with Sudanese stakeholders in support of efforts to find a path out of the crisis and advance stability in the country.
The head of the EU delegation said the visit was intended to gain a better understanding of conditions in Sudan and hear different perspectives on possible approaches to resolving the conflict and its humanitarian and economic consequences.
The ambassadors also reaffirmed their support for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity and reiterated their opposition to the establishment or recognition of parallel governing structures, according to the statement.
The European Union has repeatedly called for an end to hostilities, improved humanitarian access and the protection of civilians since the outbreak of the conflict.
The war has devastated large parts of Sudan, damaged critical infrastructure and disrupted basic services, while humanitarian agencies continue to warn of rising needs across the country.
Al-Burhan concluded the meeting by emphasizing the importance of strengthening cooperation with international partners in humanitarian and development fields to help ease civilian suffering and support efforts to restore stability.
