The Sudanese Armed Forces said they had taken control of the Al-Baraka area near the town of Kurmuk in Blue Nile State following military operations against the Rapid Support Forces and allied groups.

Military spokesman Major Ali Awad Ali said forces from the Fourth Infantry Division and allied units had “repelled RSF forces and allied elements,” according to a statement released on Sunday.

He said the operations resulted in casualties and the destruction or seizure of military equipment, without providing further details.

The army said the operations were part of efforts to secure the eastern border areas of Blue Nile State and strengthen stability in the region amid ongoing fighting in several parts of Sudan.

Military activity has increased in areas near the Ethiopian border in recent months as clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF expanded across multiple fronts.

The statement also said the operations aimed to curb smuggling and human trafficking activities along border areas linking Sudan, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has triggered a worsening humanitarian and security crisis across several Sudanese states.
