The shooting resulted in injuries to Sudanese refugees Moataz Mohammed Marsal, Ibrahim Abdullah Babiker (Tuker), and Ezzedine Mohammed Abakr, as well as South Sudanese refugee Fronka Odwat Awil and Sudanese infant Ghsoon Ezzedine Mohammed (11 days old).
Sources indicated that the incident comes two days after an earlier armed attack on the camp, marking the sixth such reported case targeting Sudanese refugees in the area, reflecting escalating security tensions within the camps.
The injured were transferred to medical facilities for treatment, amid growing concerns over the deterioration of security conditions in refugee settlements in Ethiopia’s Amhara region.
Amhara region hosts a number of Sudanese refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in their country since April 2023, amid growing humanitarian and security challenges, particularly in areas near conflict hotspots.
Incidents of violence have repeatedly occurred inside some camps, as refugees and human rights organizations call for stronger protection measures and the relocation of refugees to safer areas away from local conflicts.
