Washington – Sudan Now | March 9, 2026
The U.S. State Department has designated the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity, announcing plans to place the group on the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations starting March 16.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement today that the group has employed “excessive violence against civilians” in an effort to undermine peace efforts in Sudan and spread its extremist ideology.
The statement added that fighters affiliated with the group carried out mass executions of civilians, noting that some of them received training and support from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. It also recalled that the United States had previously designated Al-Bara’ ibn Malik Battalion linked to the group, as a terrorist entity in September 2025 due to its role in Sudan’s ongoing conflict.
The U.S. administration affirmed that it will use “all available tools” to deprive the Iranian regime and what it described as the Muslim Brotherhood’s affiliates the resources needed to support terrorism. The State Department clarified that the measures were taken under the Immigration and Nationality Act and the Executive Order on Counterterrorism.
The U.S. move comes amid Sudan’s ongoing war since April 2023 between the army and the RSF, accompanied by mutual accusations of widespread violations against civilians.
