Heads of mission from the European Union and its member states met representatives of United Nations agencies in Sudan to discuss ways to improve the delivery of humanitarian assistance to people affected by the country’s ongoing conflict.
The discussions focused on measures to strengthen aid access and ensure assistance reaches vulnerable populations across Sudan, according to a statement published by the European Union Delegation in Sudan.
“The EU and its Member States are together the largest donors of humanitarian aid and development cooperation in Sudan,” the delegation said.
The meeting comes as Sudan faces one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises following more than two years of war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to the United Nations, millions of people have been displaced since the conflict began in April 2023, while humanitarian organizations continue to warn of growing needs for food, healthcare and other essential services across large parts of the country.
Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly highlighted challenges in accessing conflict-affected areas because of insecurity, logistical constraints and damage to infrastructure, particularly in regions heavily affected by fighting.
The European Union has remained one of the largest international donors supporting humanitarian operations and development programs in Sudan, providing assistance through UN agencies, international organizations and humanitarian partners.
The latest discussions reflect ongoing international efforts to improve aid delivery and expand access to civilians affected by the conflict, amid continued concerns over the worsening humanitarian situation across the country.
