CAIRO — Egypt and Sudan underscored the importance of continuing joint coordination and consultation between the two countries during talks held in Cairo between Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi El-Din Salem, and Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Egyptian Expatriates, Dr. Badr Abdelatty.
The two sides said the meeting reviewed the course of bilateral relations and ways to further strengthen cooperation across various fields, in addition to discussing a number of issues of mutual interest as part of the ongoing consultations between the two countries.
According to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Cairo’s support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions. He also reiterated Egypt’s rejection of any parallel structures, stressing the importance of reaching a humanitarian truce that would pave the way for a sustainable ceasefire and the resumption of the political process.
The meeting comes as the war in Sudan continues following the outbreak of fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF in April 2023, amid ongoing regional and international efforts to support initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and alleviating the humanitarian crisis.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry added that Abdelatty stressed the importance of ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to affected areas and respecting the principle of Sudanese ownership of the political process. He also highlighted the importance of international efforts aimed at promoting stability and bringing the conflict to an end.
The two foreign ministers also discussed the situation of the Sudanese Embassy in Cairo and the Sudanese consulates in Aswan and Alexandria, as well as challenges affecting consular operations and services provided to Sudanese citizens residing in and present in Egypt.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister reaffirmed his country’s commitment to providing the necessary facilitation to Sudanese diplomatic and consular missions, instructing the relevant authorities to address obstacles facing consular work in a way that helps improve services delivered to Sudanese citizens.
For his part, Sudan’s Foreign Minister expressed his country’s appreciation for the support provided by Egypt to Sudan at various levels, praising the level of cooperation and coordination between the two countries, and commending the Egyptian side’s responsiveness to issues related to Sudanese diplomatic missions and the Sudanese community in Egypt.
Cairo’s reaffirmation of its rejection of the establishment of parallel entities comes in line with repeated regional and international positions stressing the need to preserve Sudan’s unity and national institutions. The United Nations Security Council had previously also reiterated its rejection of the creation of any parallel authority or government in areas under the control of the RSF, affirming its commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The two ministers agreed to continue coordination and consultations between the foreign ministries and relevant authorities in both countries, and to strengthen joint follow-up mechanisms to implement the understandings reached, in a manner that reflects the depth of the historic and fraternal relations between Sudan and Egypt and serves the common interests of both peoples.
