Khartoum – Sudan Now
The United States condemned what it described as strikes attributed to the Sudanese army that reportedly killed 28 people and injured dozens more in the town of Al-Ghubaysh in West Kordofan, while also damaging a humanitarian facility in Kauda in South Kordofan.
In a statement published by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs, Washington said the attacks targeted civilian areas and humanitarian infrastructure, calling for an immediate end to the violence and support for a humanitarian truce to allow treatment of the wounded and delivery of aid.
The condemnation follows reports in recent days of heavy casualties after aerial bombardment struck a market in Al-Ghubaysh, in one of the deadliest incidents linked to air strikes in recent weeks amid escalating fighting in the Kordofan region.
The developments also come as military tensions rise in Kauda and Heiban in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains region following competing reports of shelling and military mobilization near civilian areas.
Washington urged the warring parties to facilitate humanitarian access and protect civilians as large parts of Sudan continue to face worsening humanitarian conditions following the outbreak of war in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
Several regions of Sudan, including Kordofan, Darfur and Blue Nile State, have witnessed increasing drone attacks and aerial bombardments in recent months, contributing to rising civilian casualties and expanding displacement.
