AN NUHUD – The Dar Hamar Emergency Room said on Sunday that at least 30 people have died and 800 others have contracted cholera in An Nuhud and Wad Bandah localities in Sudan’s West Kordofan State, warning that the outbreak is spreading across more than 25 villages.
In a statement, the emergency room said preliminary figures showed the outbreak had affected dozens of communities, prompting calls for urgent intervention to prevent further infections and deaths.
The emergency room also warned of a severe shortage of diabetes medication across northern parts of West Kordofan, saying the lack of essential medicines is compounding an already deteriorating health situation.
Cholera outbreaks have affected several parts of Sudan in recent months as conflict, displacement and damage to water, sanitation and healthcare infrastructure have increased the risk of waterborne diseases.
Health authorities and humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned that shortages of medicines, clean water and medical supplies continue to undermine efforts to contain disease outbreaks in conflict-affected areas, where millions of people remain dependent on humanitarian assistance.
The Dar Hamar Emergency Room urged humanitarian organizations and health authorities to urgently deliver medicines, intravenous fluids and other essential medical supplies needed to contain the outbreak. It also called on residents to follow public health guidance and take preventive measures to help limit the spread of cholera.
