KHARTOUM – Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman and army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said the war would continue until what he described as the RSF rebellion is defeated, vowing that those responsible for killings and abuses would have no place in Sudan.
Speaking to worshippers after Friday prayers at the residence of Al-Sharif Youssef Al-Hindi in Khartoum’s Burri district, Al-Burhan said the army’s “battle of dignity” would not end until the rebellion was decisively defeated.
“Our pledge to the Sudanese people and to the martyrs is that these killers and criminals will have no foothold in Sudan,” he said, according to the state news agency SUNA.
Al-Burhan renewed his call for fighters who surrender and answer what he described as the call of national duty to be welcomed, while saying anyone who continues to carry weapons would not be accepted.
He also rejected what he described as external agendas being imposed on the Sudanese people.
The army chief said Sudan’s political problems should be resolved through an internal Sudanese dialogue aimed at reaching consensus, rebuilding the country and moving it forward.
Al-Burhan said the conflict now has multiple dimensions, arguing that the economic crisis, rising prices and shortages of resources are also part of the broader struggle facing the country.
He said Sudan would overcome those challenges in the same way, in his words, that the army had driven the RSF out of Khartoum and other cities.
The RSF did not immediately comment on Al-Burhan’s remarks.
Sudan’s war erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and has since spread across much of the country, causing mass displacement, widespread hunger and severe damage to civilian infrastructure.
Al-Burhan’s comments come as fighting continues in Kordofan and Blue Nile, where the army and allied forces have recently reported new operations against the RSF and allied formations.
He said Sudan would rise through the determination of its people and preserve its unity, sovereignty and national gains.
Al-Burhan also paid tribute to those killed during the war and praised the Al-Sharif Youssef family in Burri for what he described as its support for the armed forces.
