ASMARA – Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan arrived in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, on an official visit for talks with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki on bilateral relations and regional issues.
According to Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, the two leaders reaffirmed the importance of strengthening the longstanding fraternal ties between the Sudanese and Eritrean peoples.
The discussions also focused on bilateral relations and ways to expand cooperation across various sectors in line with the shared interests of both countries.
The visit reflects continued coordination between Sudan and Eritrea on regional and international issues of mutual concern amid ongoing developments in the Horn of Africa and the wider Red Sea region.
Sudan and Eritrea share a 680-kilometre (423-mile) border and have maintained close political and security ties for decades, alongside longstanding social and tribal links between communities living on both sides of the frontier.
Since the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan in April 2023, Eritrea has maintained support for Sudan’s state institutions and has hosted Sudanese officials on several occasions for talks on the conflict, border security and Red Sea stability.
Both countries regard security in eastern Sudan and the Red Sea as shared strategic priorities amid growing regional and security challenges.
