Hundreds of displaced people in Kalma Camp in Beliel locality, South Darfur State are facing difficult humanitarian conditions after a large-scale fire broke out and destroyed around 1,000 homes inside the camp.
Local activists said the fire completely affected 647 families and partially affected about 700 families, in addition to causing significant losses to agricultural crops and residents’ belongings, leaving many families without shelter or food resources.
They added that those affected are currently staying in the open or in temporary shelters amid a severe shortage of food and basic supplies, while community volunteers are working to provide limited assistance to the victims.
Local activists also explained that some individual initiatives have begun providing limited food meals to the affected families, but they stressed that humanitarian needs remain significant, as no direct assistance from humanitarian organizations has reached them so far.
The speakers called on international and local humanitarian organizations to urgently intervene and provide emergency relief to those affected, warning that the humanitarian situation inside the camp could worsen if aid does not arrive quickly.
Kalma Camp is considered one of the largest camps for displaced people in the Darfur region, hosting tens of thousands of residents who were displaced by the armed conflicts that the region has witnessed over the past two decades
