KHARTOUM – Drones launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) flew over Khartoum State and El Obeid in North Kordofan from early Wednesday, as Sudanese army air defense units moved to intercept them, residents and local sources said.
Residents in Omdurman said drones were seen flying at low altitude and were visible to the naked eye, while explosions were heard in parts of the capital area.
In El Obeid, local sources said one RSF drone was shot down, while other drones continued to fly over the city as air defense units responded.
There was no confirmed information on whether the drones hit any targets, and no credible reports of casualties or damage had emerged by the time of publication.
The drone activity came hours after the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and allied forces said they repelled a large-scale attack by the RSF and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) on Geissan in Blue Nile State.
Drone attacks have become an increasingly prominent feature of Sudan’s war, with both military sites and civilian areas coming under threat as fighting expands across several regions, including Kordofan, Darfur, Khartoum and Blue Nile.
The nature of the targets and the outcome of interception efforts in Khartoum and El Obeid remained unclear, with official and field reports still awaited.
