EL OBEID – A drone strike on a University of Kordofan dormitory in El Obeid killed five civilians and injured 47 others on Thursday, according to preliminary figures from the Sudan Doctors Network.
The network accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of carrying out the attack and said targeting student accommodation and educational facilities was part of a wider pattern of attacks affecting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The casualty figures and responsibility for the strike could not be independently verified. The RSF did not immediately comment on the accusation.
The Sudan Doctors Network called for urgent medical support for the wounded and urged international humanitarian and human rights organizations to condemn attacks on civilian facilities and press for accountability.
The strike comes amid an escalation in drone attacks in El Obeid and other parts of North Kordofan, where fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF has intensified in recent months.
In September, the doctors’ network reported that another drone attack in El Obeid killed two people and wounded 20 others.
North Kordofan authorities also accused the RSF of striking civilian, educational and sports facilities in El Obeid on Sept. 28, including the city’s sports complex and Sheikan University College.
International humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned that the growing use of drones in Kordofan is increasing risks to civilians and damaging infrastructure needed to sustain basic services.
Earlier attacks in and around El Obeid have affected residential areas, markets, schools, fuel facilities, water infrastructure and civilian vehicles.
The latest strike comes as military operations continue across the three Kordofan states, with both ground fighting and drone warfare placing additional pressure on civilians and already strained health and public services.
