ALAMEIN – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and national institutions during talks on Sunday with Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Egypt’s New Alamein City.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of a consultative summit bringing together the leaders of Sudan, Egypt, Eritrea and Somalia, according to statements from the Egyptian presidency and Sudanese authorities.
Egyptian presidential spokesman Mohamed al-Shennawy said the talks focused on developments in Sudan, with Sisi reiterating Cairo’s support for the Sudanese people and its commitment to preserving the country’s unity, territorial integrity and national institutions.
Sisi also stressed that Egypt would continue working at regional and international levels to advance a political solution to Sudan’s crisis, help end the war and alleviate the humanitarian suffering of Sudanese civilians.
He said those efforts were aimed at helping Sudan restore security and stability and move toward reconstruction and development.
Burhan expressed appreciation for Egypt’s support, describing the relationship between the two countries as rooted in longstanding historical and fraternal ties.
He also praised Egypt’s political and humanitarian support for Sudan and its hosting of large numbers of Sudanese who left the country because of the war.
Burhan stressed the importance of not equating what he described as Sudan’s legitimate state institutions with rebel militias or parallel entities, and praised Egypt’s position on the issue.
The talks also covered bilateral relations, with Sisi saying Egypt would continue supporting Sudan in various fields and expanding cooperation in ways that serve the interests of both countries.
Burhan arrived in New Alamein on Oct. 4 at Sisi’s invitation to participate in the consultative summit involving the leaders of Sudan, Egypt, Eritrea and Somalia.
The summit is expected to discuss regional developments of common concern and ways to strengthen consultation and coordination among countries of the Horn of Africa, with a focus on peace, stability, development and regional integration.
