Geneva – Sudan Now | 20 December 2025
The Head of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Sudan, Mohamed Rifaat, revealed shocking figures on forced displacement in the Kordofan region, warning that the humanitarian situation is sliding to unprecedented levels amid ongoing military escalation since late October.
At a press conference in Geneva, Rifaat confirmed that more than 50,000 people have been displaced from the Kordofan region since 25 October, stressing that this displacement is not a matter of choice, but a forced flight driven by fear as hostilities intensify in the areas of Babanusa, Kadugli, and El Obeid.
The UN official highlighted a humanitarian tragedy reflected in the profile of those fleeing, noting that “those lucky enough” to reach White Nile State are exclusively women and children. He warned that the number of displaced could reach 100,000 if the fighting in Kadugli continues.
Rifat expressed deep concern for the major cities in the region, noting that around half a million people face imminent danger, with the city of El Obeid appearing to be “just a step or two away” from a direct attack.
He noted that over 109,000 people have fled El Obeid and its surrounding villages, while thousands remain stranded in nearby areas due to insecurity and logistical constraints.
In a stark warning, Rifat cautioned against the consequences of the shortfall in international funding, stressing that aid organizations may be forced to make painful choices.
He explained: “We will have to decide whose lives we can save… we will be compelled to leave people in desperate need of assistance in order to prioritize only those who are on the brink of death.”
