KHARTOUM – Two Egyptian nationals were killed and a third wounded in a shooting in the Al-Souq Al-Mahalli area of Khartoum on Monday, Sudanese police said, adding that the suspect had been arrested and the weapon used in the attack seized.
Police said the shooting occurred at around 2 p.m. when a gunman opened fire on a group of people, killing the two Egyptians and wounding a third.
The injured man was taken to the Military Hospital in Omdurman for treatment.
Khartoum State Police said officers responded to the scene shortly after the shooting, arrested the suspect and recovered the weapon. Legal proceedings have been opened, while investigations continue into the circumstances and motive.
Police described the shooting as an “individual criminal incident” and urged the public not to circulate unverified information or rumors while the investigation remains underway.
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry had earlier confirmed that two Egyptian drivers were killed and a third injured in the shooting. It said Sudanese authorities had informed the Egyptian Embassy that the suspect had been arrested.
Cairo said it was following arrangements to repatriate the bodies of the two victims to Egypt and monitoring the condition of the wounded man.
The incident came as the Egyptian and Sudanese foreign ministers held a telephone conversation in which they discussed bilateral relations and continued coordination between the two countries.
Separately, Sudanese authorities have announced the formation of a committee to investigate the Shamal al-Wadi incident, where reports of strikes on mining sites triggered conflicting casualty figures and allegations over responsibility.
Police did not link the Khartoum shooting to the mining incident, and no motive for Monday’s shooting had been announced at the time of publication.
