ABU ZAIMA – Five children were killed and their mother injured on Thursday when an Antonov aircraft operated by the Sudanese army struck a home in Abu Zaima in North Kordofan State, the Emergency Lawyers Group said.
The Oct. 15 strike hit the home of Jadallah Mohamed Jadallah, killing five of his children and wounding their mother, according to the group. Several houses in the area were also destroyed.
Abu Zaima, in Hamrat al-Sheikh locality, has been hit by repeated aerial attacks during the war. In June, drone strikes on Abu Zaima market and nearby villages killed civilians and wounded dozens, according to rights monitors.
Emergency Lawyers said there were no military forces or installations in the area targeted on Thursday and condemned the strike as an attack on civilians and civilian property.
The area has become increasingly exposed to aerial warfare as fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has intensified across North Kordofan.
A U.N. fact-finding mission has previously said it had reasonable grounds to believe that the SAF carried out a drone strike on civilian commercial premises in Abu Zaima market, part of a wider pattern of attacks documented during the conflict.
Emergency Lawyers called for those responsible for Thursday’s attack to be held accountable and urged investigations into violations against civilians under international humanitarian law.
Sudan’s war between the SAF and RSF began in April 2023 and has increasingly involved airstrikes and drone attacks across Kordofan and other contested regions.
