Khartoum – Sudan Now

Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, said the war in Sudan is being driven by what he described as foreign actors, vowing that the military would continue its campaign until the rebellion is defeated and security is restored.

Burhan made the remarks during a public address in Al Aylafoun, Gezira State, where he praised local residents for supporting the armed forces during the conflict and said civilian contributions had helped sustain institutions and basic services in several areas affected by the war.

Since fighting erupted between the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023, both sides have exchanged accusations of receiving foreign support. United Nations experts and international organizations have reported allegations of weapons flows and cross-border support networks linked to the conflict, which has triggered one of the world’s largest displacement and humanitarian crises.

Burhan said Sudan had overcome what he described as major challenges during the past two years, adding that current difficulties related to electricity, fuel and public services could be addressed as part of broader efforts to restore stability in war-affected areas.

Large parts of Sudan have experienced recurring power and water outages in recent months following attacks on infrastructure and service facilities. Authorities have faced increasing challenges in restoring essential services while military operations continue on several fronts.

Burhan reiterated that the armed forces would continue what he described as efforts to liberate Sudan and defeat the rebellion, expressing confidence that Sudanese citizens would overcome the current challenges and thwart attempts to destabilize the country.

The visit to Al Aylafoun is part of a series of field visits by Burhan to areas that the Sudanese military says it has regained in Gezira State in recent months, amid government efforts to restore basic services and encourage displaced residents to return to their homes.
