NYALA – A Sudanese doctor survived an assassination attempt in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, after gunmen opened fire on him as he left the hospital where he works, the Sudan Doctors Network said.

The network said Dr. Ammar Ahmed Al-Obeid, a urologist, was wounded by gunfire and taken to a hospital in the city for medical treatment.

According to the network, the attackers were traveling in vehicles belonging to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) when they opened fire on Al-Obeid. Sudan Now could not independently verify the details of the attack, and the RSF did not immediately comment.

The Sudan Doctors Network strongly condemned the assault, describing attacks on doctors and health workers as a serious violation of international humanitarian law and a direct threat to medical personnel who continue to provide care to civilians during the war.

The attack comes as Sudan’s health system remains under severe strain from the conflict that erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF. Hospitals and clinics across Darfur have faced shortages of medicines, supplies and staff, while insecurity has disrupted access to emergency care for civilians and displaced people.

Medical workers have repeatedly reported threats, detention, looting and attacks in conflict-affected areas, raising concerns over the collapse of health services in parts of Darfur, Kordofan and Khartoum.

The network called for an immediate end to attacks on doctors and health workers and urged local and international authorities to ensure their protection, particularly in conflict zones where medical needs continue to grow.

It also called for urgent action to hold those responsible for attacks on medical personnel accountable.
