PORT SUDAN – Sudan’s Deputy Sovereignty Council Chairman Malik Agar said security arrangements for forces of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North faction he leads have reached their final stages, following talks with army Chief of Staff General Yasser Al-Atta.

Agar said the Wednesday meeting focused on military issues, including implementation of security arrangements involving SPLM-N forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces.

He did not provide details on the remaining steps or a timetable for completing the process.

Agar also said he received a briefing on the current operational situation as fighting continues on several fronts across Sudan.

The SPLM-N faction led by Agar signed the Juba Peace Agreement with Sudan’s transitional government in October 2020.

The agreement included security arrangements providing for the gradual integration of armed movement forces into Sudan’s regular security institutions, alongside demobilization of fighters who do not meet integration requirements.

Implementation began in September 2021 with the assembly of SPLM-N forces in Ulu, Blue Nile State.

In October 2022, Agar announced the start of assigning movement fighters to the army, police and General Intelligence Service following retraining.

His latest comments suggest the process is approaching a further stage of completion, although no details were given on the number of forces remaining outside the regular institutions or the specific steps still outstanding.
