KAMPALA – Darfur Region Governor Minni Arko Minnawi called on Sudanese abroad, internally displaced people and refugees to return home and take part in rebuilding the country, saying Sudan’s future must be based on justice, peace and a fair federal system.
Minnawi made the remarks during a meeting on Sunday with members of the Sudanese community in Kampala, where he discussed the situation in Sudan, the challenges facing civilians displaced by the war and recent developments on the ground.
He said the war was not being fought for the benefit of any single group or region, but to build what he described as a “united, fair and federal Sudan” that protects the rights of all regions and communities.
Minnawi said the next phase should focus on return, reconstruction and rebuilding, adding that “true victory” would not be complete without the return of displaced people and refugees, the achievement of justice and peace, and efforts to address the root causes of Sudan’s crisis.
His remarks come as millions of Sudanese remain displaced inside and outside the country since the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted in April 2023, triggering one of the world’s largest displacement and humanitarian crises.
Minnawi said he sensed a strong sense of patriotism among Sudanese community members in Uganda and a desire to return to Sudan and contribute to state-building and recovery efforts.
He thanked the Ugandan government, represented by President Yoweri Museveni, for what he described as its cooperation and humanitarian position toward Sudanese nationals. He also praised the Sudanese Embassy in Uganda for following up on the community’s situation and facilitating voluntary and safe returns to Sudan.
