Addis Ababa – Darfur Region Governor Minni Arko Minnawi urged the international community to designate the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as a terrorist organization and hold accountable the state he accused of providing the group with political, military and logistical support, during talks with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Sudan in Addis Ababa.
Minnawi said the meeting focused on Sudan’s political and humanitarian situation and efforts to end the war through a comprehensive peace process. He argued that the country’s humanitarian crisis is a direct consequence of violations and crimes he attributed to the RSF against civilians.
He called for stronger international action to bring RSF leaders to justice, saying accountability is essential to ending the conflict and preventing further abuses.
The meeting comes as international diplomatic efforts continue to seek a negotiated settlement to the conflict that erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF, while humanitarian conditions continue to worsen across large parts of the country.
Minnawi also warned that millions of internally displaced people and refugees are facing increasingly harsh conditions ahead of the rainy season. He said continued restrictions on humanitarian access and the obstruction of aid deliveries risk deepening the humanitarian crisis and require urgent international action.
He reiterated that ending the suffering of the Sudanese people depends on launching an inclusive Sudanese-led political process inside Sudan, involving all national stakeholders without exclusion, and leading to a state founded on justice, the rule of law, equal citizenship, peace and stability.
