The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, released 20 detainees on Tuesday in Hajar al-Jawad area of South Kordofan after nearly nine months of detention in areas under the movement’s control in Julud.
Relatives of the detainees said they had been arrested on accusations of links to the Sudanese army, but described them as civilians and traders with no affiliation to armed groups.
According to relatives, the detainees were released after money in their possession was confiscated, along with motorcycles and auto-rickshaws (“tuk-tuks”).
Those released included Abdo, Issa, Bashir Ahmed, Ezzeldin Ahmed and Al-Rabee Masri, in addition to 15 others who arrived in Hajar al-Jawad following their release.
The SPLM-N has not issued an official comment on the allegations, and Sudan Now could not independently verify the claims at the time of publication
