KHARTOUM – West Darfur Governor General Bahr Al-Din Adam Karama urged civilians to stay away from areas of active military operations, saying the ongoing campaign in the state is directed solely against armed groups fighting the Sudanese state and not against any tribe, social community or civilian population.

 

In a statement addressed to residents of West Darfur, Karama said the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and allied forces remain committed to protecting civilians and conducting military operations in accordance with the rules of engagement and military law.

 

He described the SAF and allied forces as “disciplined national forces” tasked with safeguarding lives and property while carrying out operations against armed elements, stressing that civilians are not the target of the campaign.

 

Karama said his government holds no retaliatory intentions toward any tribal or ethnic group, emphasizing that all citizens are equal in rights and responsibilities and will continue to receive protection without discrimination.

 

He called on residents not to be influenced by rumors or hate speech, to cooperate with the regular forces, avoid areas where military operations are underway and report any individual violations through official channels.

 

The governor said the next phase would focus on restoring security, re-establishing the rule of law, protecting civilians, creating conditions for the return of normal life and promoting peaceful coexistence among the state’s diverse communities.

 

The statement comes as fighting continues across parts of Darfur, where the Sudanese Armed Forces and allied groups have intensified military operations against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) following months of conflict that has displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians and devastated large parts of the region.

 

In recent days, the Sudanese Armed Forces, together with the Joint Force of the Armed Movements and the Sudanese Alliance Forces, announced that they had regained control of the localities of Kulbus and Jebel Moon in West Darfur as part of a broader campaign to recapture areas previously held by the RSF.

 

The conflict in Darfur has remained one of the main fronts of Sudan’s war since fighting erupted in April 2023 between the SAF and the RSF. International organizations have repeatedly called for the protection of civilians, accountability for violations of international humanitarian law and unrestricted humanitarian access to conflict-affected areas.
