KHARTOUM – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has officially reopened its mission in Khartoum, describing the move as a renewed commitment to supporting Sudan and strengthening cooperation with its government and people.
In a statement, IGAD said the reopened mission will serve as a platform for dialogue, partnership and sustained engagement with Sudan, as the regional bloc seeks to support peace, recovery and long-term stability.
IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu, who presided over the reopening during his visit to Khartoum, said the step represents more than the reopening of an office.
“This is more than the reopening of a mission. It is a reaffirmation of IGAD’s enduring commitment to stand with the Government and people of Sudan in advancing peace, recovery, and a more stable and prosperous future,” Gebeyehu said.
The reopening comes during the IGAD chief’s high-level visit to Sudan, where he held talks with senior Sudanese officials on peace efforts, regional cooperation and the humanitarian situation.
IGAD’s renewed presence in Khartoum follows a period of strained relations between Sudan and the regional bloc after the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023. The organization said the reopening reflects its intention to maintain direct engagement with Sudan in support of peace, recovery and regional stability.
