AL DABBAH – The Sudan Doctors Network said eight people were killed and 16 others, including a woman, were injured in armed clashes that erupted inside Al Dabbah Market in Sudan’sNorthern State, warning of deteriorating security and increasing risks to civilians.
The network said the fighting took place in a densely populated commercial area, describing the incident as a grave violation of civilians’ right to life and security. It warned that women, children and elderly people were exposed to immediate danger, adding that the incident reflects the growing proliferation of weapons among civilians.
The network called on authorities to launch an urgent and transparent investigation, hold those responsible accountable and strengthen security measures to prevent similar incidents. It also urged the Ministry of Health to provide immediate medical care for the injured, ensure medical supplies reach health facilities and offer psychological and humanitarian support to those affected.
In a separate statement, the Al Dabbah Local Security Committee said the clashes erupted on Tuesday evening after what it described as security disturbances between two groups involved in drug trafficking inside a palm farm west of Al Dabbah Market. It said the location of the incident in a densely populated area resulted in civilian casualties.
The committee said units of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), the General Intelligence Service and supporting forces intervened to contain the situation, adding that the area is now under control and that authorities have begun documenting the casualties and completing legal and security procedures.
Although Sudan’s war has largely been concentrated in Khartoum, Darfur and Kordofan since fighting between the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted in April 2023, officials and humanitarian organizations have increasingly warned of deteriorating security conditions in areas outside the main frontlines, including rising criminal activity and the spread of weapons.
