KHARTOUM – The African Union (AU) reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with Sudanese stakeholders in support of an inclusive Sudanese-led political process aimed at restoring constitutional governance and advancing peace and stability in the country.
The commitment was conveyed during a meeting in Khartoum on Wednesday between Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Belaiche, the African Union Commission Chairperson’s Special Representative for Sudan.
In a statement, the AU said Belaiche conveyed the African Union Commission Chairperson’s commitment to maintaining dialogue with Sudan’s various political actors as part of ongoing efforts to support an inclusive political process led by Sudanese stakeholders.
The discussions also covered political and security developments, the African Union’s mediation efforts and arrangements to reopen the organization’s liaison office in Khartoum. Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohi El-Din Salem attended the meeting.
The African Union has continued diplomatic engagement with Sudan since the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023, working with regional and international partners to encourage dialogue and support efforts aimed at ending the war through a political settlement.
The AU suspended Sudan’s membership following the military takeover on October 25, 2021, and has repeatedly called for a ceasefire, an inclusive political process and the restoration of constitutional governance while reaffirming its support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and state institutions.
